I Like To Make My Own Mayonnaise.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg yolk*
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 2 pinches sugar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 cup oil, safflower or corn

Directions

In a glass bowl, whisk together egg yolk and dry ingredients. Combine lemon juice and vinegar in a separate bowl then thoroughly whisk half into the yolk mixture. Start whisking briskly, then start adding the oil a few drops at a time until the liquid seems to thicken and lighten a bit, (which means you've got an emulsion on your hands). Once you reach that point you can relax your arm a little (but just a little) and increase the oil flow to a constant (albeit thin) stream. Once half of the oil is in add the rest of the lemon juice mixture.
Continue whisking until all of the oil is incorporated. Leave at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours then refrigerate for up to 1 week.

* Raw Eggs

*RAW EGG WARNING
Food Network Kitchens suggest caution in consuming raw and lightly cooked eggs due to the slight risk of salmonella or other food-borne illness. To reduce this risk, we recommend you use only fresh, properly refrigerated, clean grade A or AA eggs with intact shells, and avoid contact between the yolks or whites and the shell.

The Big N' Tasty from McDonald's Is No Longer Available.

My mother wanted a Big N' Tasty burger from McDonald's for lunch, so off to the McDonald's located on Bradley Park Drive I went!

The man behind the microphone acted like I was an idiot when I ordered, but he told me it was recently discontinued. I got home and researched, and I only saw one site that actually talked about the burger being discontinued to make room for oatmeal on the menu.

But apparently it's still available at lots of other McDonald's and Wikipedia and the McDonald's website lists it as currently being sold. So I'm guessing it's a gradual phase out for different markets until it's nationally phased out?

It makes me feel rather old since I remember when the Big N' Tasty came out, and I remember being told that the Bradley Park McDonald's location was one of the few test markets for it.

Nunsense and Riparian Entertainments.

Tonight I had the fabulous entertainment of our local CSU thespian's production of Nunsense.

I was extremely excited to see this show, because I have been wanting to see this show ever since Sally Struthers brought it to town a few years ago. What made it even more alluring was the fact that I knew nothing about Nunsense, except that it was a long running off-broadway comedy.

The first act of the show was absolutely amazing. There were so many pop culture references and references to Carol Channing (we hate her), Barbra Streisand (Second Hand Rose), Shirley MacLaine, Katharine Hepburn, and many other famous women icons.

Most of the main actresses were great except for one. She needs to just not be there. Maybe she was having an off day, but if she wasn't, I don't know how she made it into musical theater. It was worse than a high school productions of RENT.

I especially liked one of the last scenes in Act 1 where Sister Superior or whatever her name is sniffs a bottle of Rush (poppers), and proceeds to act high and horny at the same time. She wallows on the floor falling out and getting the holy ghost like she's some black woman praying so hard to Jesus that her wig falls off. AND DON'T YOU DENY THAT THAT HAPPENS.

The second part of Act II really needs to go away. My ass was falling asleep. I just thank God it didn't start snoring.

By the way, TK did an amazing job with the lights, and my best friend, besides Donna Karan, did an excellent job as musical director and at the keyboard.

The most fun that was had was in the later part of the evening. I met Mr. Brad at Fountain City Coffee for entertainments of the riparian variety. We chatted, laughed, and cried for 2 1/2 hours. I love Mr. Brad and I wish I got to see more of him. Sigh.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

Those Cancer Treatment Centers of America sounds like such a scam to me. You know the ones, with that butch lesbian sitting up there talking about laying on the couch dying and falling out and getting the holy ghost.

Ugh. Her commercial should go something like this.

"I was diagnosed with Stage 7 Lung/Brain/Liver Cancer and the doctor woke me up on the operating table and screamed into my ear, 'You're rotten with cancer and will be dead by sundown!' But I went to the Cancer Spa Center and the doctor said, 'Francine, I don't see it written anywhere that you have to expire before your insurance does.' Seven years later I'm still unloading trucks at my family's hardware store and I've got more lumps than a Goodwill Store pillow, but I'm ALIVE!"

I Cleaned Out My Closet.

I cleaned out my closet for the first time since probably 1998. Now, I have cleaned my closet since then, but only a little here, a little there while getting rid of unwanted junk and clothes.

This time, however, I took absolutely everything out of it, and proceeded to organize everything into boxes, and throw away any clothes I haven't worn in a year, and to throw away old books, magazines, tests, office supplies, mementos, broken CDs, and all the skeletons that were in there. Probably a few dust bunnies too.

It's amazing that the stuff I did find though. I found my grandmother's key chain that I always loved. A few years before she died, she gave it to me, and it had been missing for years. It's this beautiful crystal ball that is cut to be a prism set in this silver setting. Gorgeous.

I also found my turtle necklace that I had custom made by Dennis in Costa Rica during my 2004 trip. I really thought that thing was lost forever. Can't believe the bags of clothes and shoes that I had never even opened before. Too bad they're so old that the clothes are too big and the shoes are too small!
